Burrinja Gallery ~ Duality Exhibition
Opening Night 31st March 2017
Dandenong Ranges Open Studios 2017 presents “Duality”; a group exhibition showcasing the
artwork of 30 studio’s as they respond to this evocative theme.
For me, this theme is particularly intriguing as is stimulates my ongoing practice with the nature of change, how that manifests in the world of matter and presents itself in close contact printing and natural dyeing.
At what point does a substance change from one form to another?
Are elements of matter ever really static in a distinguishable form or are they constantly in a state of flux?
Is the concept of Duality an illusion?
Descartes concluded that the body and the soul/mind must consist of matter that is utterly incompatible with one another. What are the implications of this concept of duality?
Heraclitus, a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher observed that things are always in a state of change, and seemingly dualistic processes are but one side of the same coin; death is life and life is death.
In my exhibition piece I will be presenting my exploration of these themes, the assumptions and implications of Dualism, the works of Heraclitus and the voice that emerges from the eco-printing process in this conversation.
I highly doubt that I will exhibit a finished work, but perhaps a snippet of the inquiry, as my practice as an arts-based inquirer or artistic philosopher is to attend to what emerges in the creative process. This I reflect upon artistically to inform my way of being in the world, and in turn how I may contribute to human and ecological flourishing.
We hope you can join us on opening night.
